5 Ways to Remove Old Wallpapers

Removing old wallpaper can be a tedious and time-consuming task, but it's necessary if you want to update the look of your walls. Depending on your wall paper you have, they can look old and tired, have tears or scratches, or just not match anymore and you want them gone. Removing wall papers is a bit of a process and just trying to tear them off the wall is guaranteed to make the project way more frustrating than it needs to be.

Here are five ways to remove old wallpapers:

  1. Use a Wallpaper Steamer: A wallpaper steamer is a device that heats up water and turns it into steam. The steam softens the wallpaper adhesive, making it easier to remove. You can rent a wallpaper steamer from a hardware store or home improvement center. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

  2. Use Hot Water and Detergent: Mix hot water and detergent in a bucket and use a sponge or spray bottle to apply the mixture to the wallpaper. Allow it to soak for a few minutes before scraping off the wallpaper with a putty knife or wallpaper scraper. Repeat the process as necessary until all the wallpaper is removed.

  3. Use a Wallpaper Stripper: A wallpaper stripper is a liquid solution that is applied to the wallpaper. The solution softens the adhesive, making it easier to remove. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when using a wallpaper stripper.

  4. Use Vinegar and Water: Mix equal parts vinegar and hot water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the wallpaper and let it sit for a few minutes. Use a scraper or putty knife to remove the wallpaper. Repeat the process as necessary until all the wallpaper is removed.

  5. Sand the Wallpaper: If the wallpaper is too difficult to remove with any of the above methods, you can try sanding it off. Use a sanding machine or a coarse sandpaper to remove the top layer of the wallpaper. This will allow the water or stripper to penetrate the adhesive, making it easier to remove.

Removing old wallpaper can be a frustrating and overwhelming task, but with these five methods, you can make the process much easier. Be sure to choose the method that works best for your specific situation and always follow safety guidelines when using tools and chemicals. These steps will help make the stress of the project more manageable and prevent damage from happening to your walls behind the wall paper.
